Hannah Kent Obituary

Hannah Frances Pope Kent, 85, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2023, in Tifton, GA.  She was born on November 2, 1937, as the only child of Walter Melvin Pope and Elizabeth Mixon Pope of Glenwood, GA.  Hannah graduated from Glenwood High School, in Glenwood, GA, as Valedictorian of her Class.  She then attended Georgia Teacher's College in Statesboro, GA, graduating in 3 years with a BS Degree in Social Studies.  After her college graduation, she taught 5th grade in Laurens County. 

Hannah married, moved to Statesboro, GA, and began working with the ASCS Office.  While residing in Statesboro, she had two children; a daughter, Sherry, and one son, Chip.  Soon she moved to Alamo, GA, and began working as the bookkeeper for Hattaway Gin, Warehouse and Fertilizer Company.

In 1971, she began a long-term career in Education by attending Georgia Southwestern and Georgia Southern College, earning a Master's in Early Childhood and a Six-year Administration Degree.

She began teaching as a Kindergarten and Preschool teacher at Wheeler Co. Primary School.  In 1975 she became Director of the Preschool at Wheeler Co. Primary School. 

In 1978, Hannah married her high school sweetheart, the TRUE LOVE of her life, Roy Lee Kent of Glenwood, GA.  She began teaching in Telfair Co. for only two years, to third and fourth graders.  In 1983, she became the Principal of Wheeler Co. Primary School.

After losing her husband, Roy Lee Kent, in 1992, she moved to Vidalia, GA, where she became Principal of Montgomery Co. Primary School in Mt. Vernon, GA.   In July of 1999, she retired from Education and moved to Tifton, GA, where she began working with her daughter, Sherry, and son-in-law, Spud Bowen, in one of their businesses, Bowen Photography Inc. as their bookkeeper.  She retired a second time in 2005. 

Hannah had many professional accomplishments.  She was a member of PAGE, GAESP, ASCD, the National Council of Reading, an Honorary member of the International Reading Association, Heart of Ga Reading Council, where she received the Outstanding Leadership Award for the year 1991, National Council of Teachers of English, GACIS state and district levels, a lifetime member of Georgia Retired Educators, Tift County Retired Educators, where she served as Secretary for two years, and held two positions for Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. 

Personal accomplishments include serving on the Wheeler Co. Bd of Health and being appointed to the Board of Directors for the Heart of Georgia Technical Institute.  She was the first female member of the Lions Club, a member of the Glenwood Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 13 years, and served as Charge Conference Secretary finishing her mother, Elizabeth Pope's term and continuing to serve years after.  Moving to Tifton, she attended the First United Methodist Church Covenant Sunday School Class and was a member of the First United Methodist Church Women's Circle, serving one term as President. 

Hannah was preceded in death by both parents, Walter and Elizabeth Pope, and her husband, Roy Lee Kent.  Hannah is survived by her daughter, Sherry R. Bowen (Spud) and her son, Chip Rocker (Kristin), and one nephew, Brett Allen (Kim) of Powder Springs, GA.  She is survived by four grandchildren, J. Carson Bowen, III (Heather), P. Conner Bowen (Bridgett), Kaitlin E. Rocker, and K. Chase Rocker.  Survivors also include four great-grandchildren, Cayden E. Bowen, Phillip C. Bowen II, Mary Ella Bowen, and Cassidy E. Bowen. 

Visitation will be held at the Glenwood Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon, March 12, 2023, at 2:30 P.M., with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 P.M.  A brief interment will follow in the Glenwood City Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Lee Pettis officiating.

Active Pallbearers will be: J. Carson Bowen III, P. Conner Bowen, Brett Allen, Al Knight, Bill Knight, and Mike Dixon.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Wallace (Wally) Adams, Jr.,  Gary Braddy,  Larry Clark, Bill Ford,  Hal Futral,  John Futral,  Windsor Johnson,   G.M. Joiner,  Jim Paul Pool and  Don Stone.

Funeral arrangements have been handled by Bowen Donaldson Funeral Home in Tifton and Towns Funeral Home in Alamo, GA.
