James Robert “Mr. Nick” Nicholson, age 85, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 24, 2022, at the Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA, after celebrating his birthday surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Nick was born December 24, 1937, in Lawrenceville, GA to the late James Franklin and Lillian Louise Ratcliffe Nicholson. On November 19, 1967, he married Wilma Arlene Bridges, and together they traveled the world during his years of service in the United States Air Force where he retired as a master sergeant. Mr. Nick was a member of the Alamo First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School director and sang in the choir for many years. He volunteered with Alamo First Baptist Builders in Africa, Builders for Christ, Legacy Outdoor Ministries, and Springhill Fire Department for as many years as he was able. Mr. Nick was a retired school teacher and beloved golf coach for the Wheeler County Middle and High School. In his role as an educator, he also served as a mentor to many students as he selflessly gave of his time and talent. He loved hunting, fishing, and playing golf, but his favorite pastime was being with his family.
Mr. Nick is survived by two daughters: Alma Nicholson (Greg Malis) of New Orleans, Louisiana; and Karen Nicholson of Fargo, North Dakota; step-daughter: Patty Kindig (Rick) of Bunker Hill, Indiana; step-son: Russell Kidwell (Barbara) of Lyons, Georgia; four grandchildren: Hunter Scanson, Taylor Scanson, Melissa Cook, and Carrie Kindig-Woolley; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Judy Hogan (Don) of Marietta, Georgia and Jane Washington of Henderson, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his loving wife: Wilma Bridges Nicholson; and his parents: James Franklin and Lillian Louise Ratcliffe Nicholson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials and donations be made to the ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to the Alamo First Baptist Church, PO Box 496, Alamo, GA 30411.
Visitation for Mr. Nick will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Towns Funeral Home from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Alamo First Baptist Church with interment following in the Alamo City Cemetery.
