Ms. Mildred Virginia Smith McCullough, age 94, of Alamo, GA, passed away at Community Hospice in Vidalia, GA, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, after an extended illness.
Ms. McCullough was born July 15, 1929, in Dungannon, VA, to the late Lilburn and Mollie Lane Sluss. She grew up in the mountains in a small home with 8 siblings and 5 step siblings on a farm. She married Glen Curtis Smith on December 27, 1947. They shared 7 children. She worked in her early years raising her 7 children in the coal camps in West Virginia. She later worked in the cotton mills in Tennesee, Wayne Watson Co., Stone Mountain Handbag and Oxford of Alamo. She retired in 1995 after the passing of her husband. She married Willie C. McCullough February 22, 2003. She and W.C. enjoyed attending service at Snowhill Community Church, reading their Bible and praying together. Ms. McCullough enjoyed sewing, watching the birds, caring for her plants and fishing. She was a member of Snowhill Community Church for over thirty years. She was humbled through the years to be recognized as the eldest mother on Mother’s Day at Snowhill as she was known as “mother” to so many in the church. She was a loving mother, grandma, granny, great-grandma, great-great-grandma, sister and sister-in-Christ to many. She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed dearly.
Ms. McCullough was predeceased by her parents: Lilburn and Mollie Sluss; husbands: Glen Curtis Smith and Willie C. McCullough; and six siblings. She is survived by her children: Margaret Testa (Morris), Jeanette Smith (Vernon), Kay Kitchens, Sharon Daughtry, Curtis Smith (Patty), Diane Lee, Nina Oubre (Scott), Patsy Miller, and Carolyn Beecher; one sister: Ruby Napier; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Towns Funeral Home from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Funeral Service will be held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Snowhill Community Church, with interment following at Sherwood Memorial Park in Jonesboro, GA at 3:00 P.M. Rev. Kevin Connell and Rev. Ronny Moore will officiate. Jason Curtis, Brett Kempton, Colby Kempton, Nathan Larubio, Timmy Lee, Chris Smith, and Camden Wigley will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Snowhill Community Church. Ms. McCullough loved her church and her church family.
