Raymond Bernon Benton, 78, of Centerville, GA, died November 6, 2021, at Heart of Georgia Hospice in Perry following a lengthy illness. He was born October 8, 1943, in Wheeler County, GA, to the late Bernon and Fannie Foster Benton. Raymond grew up in Glenwood where he attended Glenwood School and played basketball. He was a decorated US Army veteran, serving in Korea, Germany, Panama, and two tours in Vietnam, and he was awarded two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. He retired from Robins Air Force Base after 34 years of civilian service. Raymond served many years with the Masons and Shriners and loved working to help the Children’s Hospital. He enjoyed his Hunting Club friends, and he loved his Lord, his Country, and his family.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ranny Benton.
Family survivors include his wife: Waunell Holland of Centerville, GA; son: Victor Raymond Benton (Lisa) of Dry Branch; two granddaughters: Brandy Benton Lindsay (Josh) of Indiana and Brianna Benton of Columbus; three great-grandchildren: Paul, Peyton, and Benton Lindsay; sister: Blanche (Holmes)Clements; sisters-in-law: Judy Benton Browning and Debbie Sharpe Dixon; nieces: Cynthia (Nick) Burney, Kimberley Pinzon, Renae (Ricky) Evans, and Diana (Shane) Stewart; nephews: Holmes (Ruth Ann) Clements and Robbie Rodgers; stepchildren: Ricky Glisson, Carol Vogle, and Cindy Hooker; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and numerous Benton and Foster cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 11, 2021, at the Benton Family Cemetery, located at 1639 East Highway 126, Glenwood, GA.
