Vinia West Obituary

Ms. Vinia Nelms Gillis West, 89, of Glenwood, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at her home. She was born May 19, 1932, in Glenwood, GA to the late Sam and Florence Brown Nelms. Ms. West attended the Glenwood Church of God and was retired from the Glenwood Hospital where she cooked for many years in the cafeteria. She enjoyed sewing and making toys for children at Christmas.

Ms. West is survived by four siblings: Vanzie Gillis of Glenwood, Aaron Nelms of Savannah, Larry Nelms of Mt. Vernon, and Roberta Leggett of McRae; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded by two husbands: Harold Gillis and Amos West; two sons: Steve Smith and Allen Smith; and seven siblings: Silvia Warren, Mattie Nowling, Faye Fields, LeRoy Nelms, Verlin Nelms, Leon Nelms, and Levoy Nelms.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery, Alamo, GA with Rev. Ronny Saxon officiating.

The family and Towns Funeral Home respectfully ask all in attendance to continue to follow the social distancing guidelines set by our local health district and the CDC.
